Warning over swimming in Northamptonshire open water

A warning about the dangers of swimming in open water has been issued by the emergency services in Northamptonshire.

The warning comes after three young girls got into difficulties in the lakes near Ebbw Vale Road in Irthlingborough.

The girls were all rescued and treated by paramedics at the scene.

Insp Peter Chisholm from Northamptonshire Police said the water may appear warm near the banks, but quickly becomes cold further out.

"We realise the hot weather makes it tempting to get into the water, but usually about the first metre, metre-and-a-half is warm and after that it is really freezing cold," he said.
