Packed travellers' site meeting in Cambridgeshire

About 1,000 people attended a meeting over plans to build a travellers' site in a Cambridgeshire village.

So many turned up to the hour-long event on Thursday evening that it was moved from Queen's Park Pavilion in Yaxley to the field outside.

Great Drove, Yaxley, is one of 17 sites which Huntingdonshire District Council is consulting on as a possible base for travellers.

Council staff explained to residents how to complete consultation forms.

They were told they can raise concerns about extra demand on services but cannot oppose the plans with speculation about house price devaluation and increased crime and insurance costs.

The council said in a statement: "We are currently consulting with our local communities regarding sites, which have been suggested by landowners, some of which are in the Yaxley area.

"Due to the level of public interest we have extended the consultation period, which will now run until 30 July."
