Kent Police scam warning after driver buys fake gold

A conman duped another man into buying fake gold after claiming he needed money because his car had broken down.

Kent Police said the victim was in his car at traffic lights in Maidstone on Saturday when he was approached by a man who was waving down cars.

The Turkish man claimed his black Mercedes had broken down which was carrying his wife and child and he had no money to repair it.

He sold him a ring and bracelet for £40 but the jewellery was found to be fake.

Officers said that after the man took the cash, he got into a black Mercedes parked nearby and drove away.

A spokeswoman for Kent Police warned the public to be aware of the scam and urged anyone with information to contact officers.
