Lindsey Oil Refinery fire: Man 'unaccounted for'

A man is missing after an explosion and fire at an oil refinery in North East Lincolnshire.

Two other people suffered minor injuries in the fire at Lindsey Oil Refinery in North Killingholme which started just before midday on Tuesday.

More than 50 firefighters were called to the site at the height of the blaze.

Oil company Total, which runs the refinery, said a man who was working on the site had still not been accounted for after a roll-call.

His family had been informed and emergency services were continuing to search the area.

A Total spokesman said: "Although the incident does not pose a threat to local residents, it is still unsafe for fire crews to enter.

"However, once the area has been secured, crews will be able to gain access."

Crews from Humberside Fire Service are working with fire teams based at the site to extinguish the fire, which could take until early on Wednesday morning.

Total confirmed that a fire had started, followed by a small explosion.

Eyewitnesses said flames shot some 150ft (46m) into the air following the blast.

A Total spokeswoman said: "The refinery emergency plan has been put into operation and the fire is currently being contained. All adjacent units have been safely isolated."

People living in the area reported hearing the incident across a wide area, and black smoke could be seen as far away as Hull.

'Ball of flames'

One eyewitness described the incident as "a massive ball of smoke and flames". Another said it "was frightening".

People in the nearby town of Immingham were advised to stay indoors and close doors and windows.

The fire service said the fire involved crude oil. Police said the incident was ongoing and firefighters had the fire under control.

Road closures were in place at both ends of Eastfield Road and Church Lane in North Killingholme.
