Jury sworn in for Uckfield police driving death trial

A jury has been sworn in at the start of the trial of a road traffic police officer accused of causing death by careless driving.

Pedestrian Luke Bland, 20, was helping at the scene of an earlier crash when off-duty Pc Stewart Chalmers's Lotus sports car hit him.

Mr Bland, of Lime Close, Uckfield, East Sussex, died at the scene on the A26 at Little Horsted on 14 February 2009.

Sussex Police officer Mr Chalmers, 30, has denied the charge.

He entered a not guilty plea at a hearing in April.

The Maidstone Crown Court trial, which is expected to last eight days, is to begin hearing evidence on Tuesday.
