The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) at Stormont has refused a request from the former chairman of Northern Ireland Water to give evidence to the commitee's special hearing into its governance.

Mr Mellor was sacked, along with three other non-executive directors, after an internal probe found there had been a "serious breakdown in the government and control framework" of NI Water in relation to contract approvals.

He said his written offer earlier this month was rejected by the committee.

Mr Mellor said he wanted to tell the committee his views on the internal audit and the level of fairness involved.

The committee considered his request in closed session but wrote back rejecting his offer.

It is understood the committee decided the purpose of its probe was to question accounting officers, in line with convention.

The committee thanked him for the offer and suggested he give written evidence for members' consideration.

The decision was taken by consensus.
