A suspect package left outside a police station in Liverpool was a hoax device, officers have confirmed.

Bomb disposal experts and the police cordoned off roads and closed businesses on Saturday night near Tuebrook police station.

A controlled explosion and tests were carried out on the package.

A 23-year-old man, two boys aged 14 and 17, and a 16-year-old girl have been arrested on suspicion of offences under the explosives act.

Det Supt Paul Richardson, of Merseyside police, said: "Officers reacted in the only way possible - the safety of the public being their first priority.

"Clearly we will not tolerate this mindless waste of police time and public inconvenience."
