A major search is under way in the Lake District for a missing canoeist.

Emergency services were alerted after the canoeist, believed to be an 18-year-old from Lancashire, failed to surface after overturning on Ullswater.

He was about 565ft (200m) from the shore at the time of the incident at about 1415 BST.

A land and water search by police, coastguards, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team and members of the public is continuing.

A police underwater search team was brought in to help.

A Cumbria Police spokeswoman said: "This large-scale search continues this evening and includes the police underwater search team.

"Police are also working to inform and support immediate family members."
