Firefighters have been issuing water safety advice after a teenager drowned in a South Yorkshire lake.

Phillip Law, 15, had been swimming in the lake off Manvers Way in Wath-upon-Dearne with two friends on Wednesday when he got into difficulty.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's Technical Rescue Unit returned to the lake on Sunday to speak to people about the dangers.

They advised looking for signs or flags which indicate if it is safe to swim.

They also warned that often it can be impossible to gauge the temperature, flow or depth of lakes and rivers.

A spokesman for the service said firefighters who attended the lake on Wednesday had been shocked by the incident and wanted to make sure people considering swimming in open water were aware of the risk.
