The former boyfriend of missing Suzanne Pilley has appeared in court in Edinburgh charged with her murder.

David Gilroy, 47, is not believed to have made a plea during the private appearance before Sheriff Deirdre MacNeill. He has been released on bail.

The body of book-keeper Ms Pilley has not been found.

Detectives have been working on the theory that the 38-year-old's remains were dumped in countryside in the west of Scotland.

On Wednesday, police arrested Mr Gilroy, a married colleague of Ms Pilley whom she had been having an affair with.

Mr Gilroy's lawyer Jim Wardlaw said that during the brief appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court his client had faced a charge of murder. He would not reveal whether Mr Gilroy faced any further charges.

Mr Gilroy was released on bail pending further inquiries and is expected to appear in court again next week.

Ms Pilley, from the Stenhouse area of Edinburgh, has not been seen since 4 May when she was spotted on CCTV arriving at Thistle Street-based Infrastructure Managers where she worked.
