Extra officers patrol Cramlington after rape

Police have stepped up their presence in a Northumberland town after a woman was raped on a footpath.

Northumbria Police said more officers were patroling the Cramlington area after the 46-year-old woman was attacked on Friday night.

She was walking along Northumbrian Road, near the Cramlington Youth Project building, when the assault happened, police said.

Her attacker was in his late 40s, with short blond hair and a stocky build.

Det Insp Tim Miley said: "We know there were a number of people using the footpath at around the time of this incident and we are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity at that time to get in touch."
