Disused building fire prompts supermarket evacuation

A Teesside supermarket was evacuated overnight when a fire started at a nearby disused building.

Asda workers were led to safety as a precaution while fire crews tackled the flames at the former engineering firm in Blue House Point Road, Stockton.

The road was closed, along with nearby Portrack Lane, until the fire was brought under control early on Monday.

Staff were later allowed to return and the two roads have since reopened, Cleveland Police said.

A force spokesman said the cause of the fire is currently unknown.
