A warning has been made by Jersey's fire service to football fans, urging them not to drink while cooking.

The service said most fires start in a kitchen and cooking food is often left unattended by people drinking alcohol.

Marc Le Cornu, fire safety manager, said there is concern this will rise during the World Cup, and with an increase in people having barbecues.

Posters with the wording "Don't let your World Cup end in sudden death!" have been put up by the service.

Mr Le Cornu said: "All too often our firefighters go to homes where someone has come back after having a few drinks, put a pie in the oven, sausages under the grill or chips on the hob and promptly fallen asleep.

"I am really enjoying watching the games at home and I want everyone else to have a memorable World Cup for all the right reasons."
