Couple rescued from car fire on the A7 near Hawick

Firefighters have praised two members of the public for rescuing a man and a woman from a car fire.

The car crashed and rolled off the A7 near Hawick at about 0155 BST before bursting into flames.

A fire service spokesman said a van driver and a taxi driver saw the accident and pulled the pair free by smashing through the sunroof.

The couple have been treated for superficial wounds at Borders General Hospital.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said the couple had a lucky escape.
