A 24-year-old man has been remanded into custody charged with trying to rob a cash-in-transit van at gun-point.

Brendan McKernan, of no fixed address, was charged at Belfast Magistrate's Court with trying to steal a cash box which contained £25,000.

He is also accused of possessing an imitation gun with intent, hijacking a car and stealing a mobile phone.

It is understood the charges relate to an attempted robbery in west Belfast on Friday morning.

A cash delivery driver was threatened as he carried a box of money to a bank near Owenvarragh Park.

The two would-be robbers then fled empty-handed in a people carrier which had been hijacked from a woman earlier that morning at a shopping centre car park in Kennedy Way.
