A Grade II-scheduled ancient monument in a Surrey town has reopened after a 12-month restoration project.

The road under Guildford's narrow Castle Arch closed in February 2009 after falling debris led to the structure being deemed unsafe.

Surrey County Council closed Castle Hill to traffic and pedestrians, and Guildford council repaired the arch with approval from English Heritage.

The archway is a remnant of the town's castle wall.

Damage was caused after water and frost caused the surface of the arch to crumble.
