Man dies trying to save Torbay swimmer


A 55-year-old man has died trying to rescue someone in the water at Preston Sands in Torbay.

He swam out at lunchtime to rescue the swimmer who had got into difficulty, but got into trouble himself.

The coastguard rescue team were called and tried to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene. The original swimmer got back to shore safely.

Police say it appears to be a tragic accident and the coroner has been informed.
