Teenage soldier killed in Hampshire car crash named


A soldier who was killed when his car smashed into a tree has been named.

Lee Smith, 18, from Northern Ireland, died when his Fiat Punto crashed in Whitehill Road, in Standford, Bordon, Hampshire, at 2140 BST on Tuesday.

Two soldiers who were passengers in the car, a 17-year-old from Blackpool and an 18-year-old man from Devon, were critically injured.

A fourth soldier, 17, and also from Devon, escaped with minor injuries. Police are appealing for witnesses.

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said officials were aware of the crash, which is under investigation.
