A main commuter route in Gloucester has reopened after being closed when a digger hit a footbridge.

The A417 between the Walls roundabout and the C&G roundabout was shut for more than an hour during the morning peak traffic.

There were long delays and problems were exacerbated by a minor shunt near the accident scene.

Structural engineers have checked the extent of the damage to the bridge and say only minor repairs are needed.
