Bob Geldof is to be awarded an honorary degree from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA), it has been announced.

The anti-poverty campaigner will receive a Master of Arts at the UCA Canterbury graduation ceremony in July.

UCA said it wanted to honour his contribution to the arts and humanitarian work.

Filmmaker Parminder Vir and Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman will also receive honorary degrees.

Dianne Taylor, Pro Vice-Chancellor at the university, said: "As a broadcaster and musician, Bob Geldof's contribution to the creative arts has been substantial.

"He will be an inspiration to our graduating students."

She added: "As a Kent resident he has been tireless in promoting education in the local area, opening schools and supporting local campaigns."

UCA has about 7,000 students based at campuses in Canterbury, Maidstone and Rochester in Kent and Epsom and Farnham in Surrey.
