Man still held over Southampton bridge cyclist attack

Police are continuing to question a 26-year-old man after a cyclist was beaten up and seriously hurt on a Southampton bridge.

The 24-year-old victim was cycling on Central Bridge on Tuesday night when he was attacked by a group of people.

He suffered head injuries and is in a serious condition in the neurological unit at Southampton General Hospital.

The man was arrested on Friday along with a woman, 18, both of Southampton, on suspicion of attempted murder.

She has since been released on bail.

Case of beer

A group of three men and a woman are thought to have walked from Woolston across the Itchen Bridge towards the city where they attacked the cyclist.

One of the men was carrying a box, possibly a case of beer, and the woman was wearing a bright pink top.

Officers want to hear from anyone who saw or heard the attack, or saw the group earlier in the evening.

Det Ch Insp Kath Barnes said: "The location where the assault took place is in an alleyway that has been created as a walk through whilst building works are ongoing on Central Bridge.

"There may have been people who were nearby and not realised it, because this area is normally far more open and accessible."

Officers also want to hear from anyone who was with the group or spent time with them earlier in the evening.
