A two-year-old girl is still seriously ill in hospital after she was crushed under the wheel of a car in Devon.

The girl climbed into the car on the driveway of her home in Honicknowle, Plymouth, on Friday afternoon and turned on the ignition.

As the car lurched backwards she was thrown under the front wheel on the driver's side.

Police said the girl remained in a serious condition with head injuries at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

The girl was left unconscious on the ground after what Devon and Cornwall Police called a "freak accident" in Chard Barton at 1645 BST.

Neighbours attempted to resuscitate her before she was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and later to Frenchay Hospital.
