Council vehicles in County Durham have been branded with slogans to alert motorists to protect their valuables in a bid to cut car crime.

Refuse trucks have been decorated with signs bearing the slogan "if you can see it so can they".

The aim is to remind drivers not to leave valuables, such as satellite navigation systems and mobile phones, on display in their vehicles.

The initiative has been organised by the county council and Durham Police.

Councillor Lucy Hovvels said: "Car crime is opportunist crime - without the opportunity, a thief wouldn't take your belongings from your vehicle.

"Removing property from sight and taking it with you or locking it in the boot of your car will dramatically reduce your chances of falling victim to car crime."
