A man has been charged after a six-year-old girl was stabbed in the chest and her mother suffered a hand wound.

Robert Knox, 28, a health care worker from Russell Court on Guildford's Bellfields Estate, is charged with two counts of grievous bodily harm.

He will appear before Guildford magistrates later.

The girl was taken to the Royal Surrey Hospital following the stabbing on Wednesday. Her mother was arrested but later released without charge.

Surrey Police described her condition as comfortable and said she was doing well.
