Gas blast suspected as cause of fatal fire in Essex

A 91-year-old man has been found dead in an Essex house by the fire service called following the sound of a blast.

The incident happened in the early hours at Arnham Grove in Braintree.

An Essex County Fire Service spokesman said one person was found dead in the end of terrace property.

Julian Ashley, fire service divisional officer, said: "The neighbours heard an explosion and made a 999 call. Structural damage to the bungalow suggests a gas explosion."

He added: "An investigation by Essex County Fire Service and the police will be carried out this morning to establish this."
