Man critical after group attack in Southampton

A man is in a critical condition after being beaten up by a group of people in Southampton.

The 24-year-old victim was cycling on Central Bridge on Tuesday when he was attacked shortly after 2330 BST.

He suffered serious head injuries and is being treated in the neurological unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Police said the group of between four and five men and one woman were in the middle of the road at the Itchen Bridge end when the attack happened.

'Very serious'

One of the men is described as tanned and wearing a white t-shirt and is believed to have run off towards Debenhams.

The woman in the group is described as wearing a bright pink top and ran off in the direction of Marsh Lane.

Det Insp Gary Towse from Southampton CID said: "This is a very serious assault which has left a man in a critical condition in hospital.

"We received a call from a member of the public alerting us to this incident and an officer on patrol in the area was flagged down and was one of the first on scene."
