Man hurt in gunpoint theatre raid in Chichester

A man has been injured in a gunpoint robbery at a theatre in West Sussex.

Sussex Police said two men brandishing handguns threatened three staff and a visitor during the raid at Chichester Festival Theatre, Broyle Road.

The masked thieves made the three men and one woman, aged between 19 and 24, lie on the floor while they took a large amount of cash from the safe.

Officers said the visitor was struck in the face by a robber during the incident at about 0100 BST on Sunday.

Witness appeal

He suffered a minor injury and was treated at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester.

The suspects were described as white, both 5ft 10in to 5ft 11in tall and with local accents.

They wore dark-coloured long sleeved jumpers, white plastic gloves, and camouflage trousers.

Det Sgt Colin O'Hare appealed for witnesses, and said: "Although it was late at night we think it likely that people driving past may have seen something, without perhaps realising its significance at the time."
