A man wanted by police over an attempted murder in Essex nearly three years ago has been shot dead in Spain.

Dan Smith, 24, a former builder from Billericay, had been sought by officers in connection with a shooting on 7 July 2007 near Chelmsford.

A man in his 50s suffered wounds to his stomach and arms during the attack at his home in Stock.

Spanish police said Mr Smith was shot outside a bar in Mijas, on the Costa Del Sol, late on Saturday night.

The Foreign Office said Mr Smith died on Sunday in Malaga.

A spokesman added it was providing consular assistance to his family.

Essex Police appealed for information about Mr Smith's whereabouts at the end of July 2007.
