A World Cup "fan park" for up to 11,000 fans, which will include a giant screen showing matches, will be built in Bristol's Queen Square.
The 312-sq-ft (29-sq-m) screen is being set up for a reported £80,000, and is being sponsored by Hyundai.
Organisers aim to have the screen ready for the first World Cup game between South Africa and Mexico on Friday.
"This is an opportunity that we could not let slip away," said Bristol 2018 bid director Stephen Wray.
He added: "If England are successful in the bid to host the 2018 World Cup, then we will need as much practice at staging fan fests of this nature as possible."
