RSPB's Loch Garten osprey reserve plugs into the mains

An RSPB reserve in the Highlands has connected to mains electricity for the first time, ending its reliance on a noisy gas generator.

The project at Loch Garten, near Aviemore, involved burying a cable underground for more than a mile.

Work was delayed over winter because of extreme temperatures and heavy snow.

Noise from the generator was blamed for a humming sound and poor picture quality on webcasts from an osprey nest on the reserve.

Loch Garten has a webcam showing the nest and images are streamed on the internet.

Three chicks are being raised in the nest by female adult bird EJ, a regular visitor to Loch Garten, and mate Odin.
