Freedom honour given to seafarers

Sailors and fishermen have been honoured by North East Lincolnshire Council by being awarded the Freedom of the Borough.

The accolade was given to the Merchant Navy and fishing fleets to recognise the contribution made to the community.

The ceremony included a service at Grimsby Minster followed by a parade through the town centre.

Tim Branch, from the Immingham branch of the Merchant Navy, said it was a fantastic honour.

The freedom of the borough is the greatest ceremonial honour a local authority can bestow on an organisation.

Mr Branch added: "It is prestigious that the borough of North East Lincolnshire is recognising the services of the navy to the community."
