Bromsgrove amputee is firefighter of the year
A fireman who lost part of his leg in an accident has been named firefighter of the year.
Simon Hawkins, from Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, returned to work despite the motorcycle accident in 2004.
He said he could not believe he had been given the accolade.
He was honoured at The Spirit of Fire Awards at Wembley Stadium which saw members of the fire service and the public honoured.
His honour was presented by entertainer Bruce Forsyth who described him as the star of the show.
"I was proud to be giving him the award," he said.
Mr Hawkins was involved in a high-speed motorcycle crash after working as a firefighter for 12 years.
His injuries were so severe that doctors were forced to amputate his lower left leg.
He returned to work a year later to do office duties, but was determined to return to firefighting.
