The Tyne Tunnel will be closed this weekend as work continues on the second river crossing.

Project bosses said the measure was necessary to allow demolition of the original Howard Street Bridge in Jarrow, which was replaced earlier this year.

Drivers can use the Tyne Bridge or A1 Western Bypass as alternative routes during the closure - from 0500 BST on 5 June to 2300 BST on 6 June.

The second tunnel is due to open in February 2011.

The new Howard Street Bridge, and the pedestrian and cyclist tunnels, will remain open throughout the demolition work.
