Manchester prison officer charged with attacking inmate

A prison officer has been charged with assault after an inmate was attacked at a prison in Greater Manchester.

The officer, 31, allegedly attacked the prisoner in his cell at HMP Manchester on 23 May.

A second officer, 38, was arrested in connection with the attack and has been bailed, police said.

The prison service said both the officers were suspended on 31 May, following an internal investigation.

The officer is due to appear at Manchester City Magistrates' Court on 7 July, police said.
