Work is under way to demolish a Shrewsbury building which was badly damaged by a suspected gas explosion.

The blast at the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road on 3 January injured 12 people and closed parts of the town centre for more than a month.

Work by Bristol company Bensons will take about four weeks to complete and road closures have not been planned.

The Health and Safety Executive is trying to find out the cause of the explosion.

One woman was airlifted to hospital with burns to her head, neck and chest, and a man suffered spinal injuries in the explosion.

Five people were trapped in a car beneath rubble but were pulled free by bystanders and emergency crews.
