A five-year-old girl who was bitten in the face by her family's pet American bulldog is "recovering well" in hospital, police have said.

Tanisha Hall suffered "life-changing" facial injuries in the attack at her home in Hanemill Court, Northampton, on Sunday.

Northamptonshire Police said inquiries were continuing into the incident.

Tanisha was taken to hospital with her stepfather, who received injuries to his arm while grappling with the dog.

The dog, named Charlie, was put down by a vet on Monday afternoon.

The breed is not banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Tanisha's grandfather, John Hall, said she had bent down to kiss Charlie when the dog turned on her.
