A bid has been made to expand an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to include the Essex shoreline of an estuary.

Tendring District Council wants to secure the status for the River Stour's southern shore.

The northern shore is already afforded the distinction because it falls under the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB.

The council has sent a report to Natural England, which if successful could include Manningtree and Mistley.

It says it has the "full support" of Essex County Council, Essex and Suffolk Wildlife Trusts, the RSPB and the Council for the Protection of Rural England.

Chairman of the Suffolk Coasts and Heath AONB, David Wood, said: "To have only one side of an estuary formally designated as an AONB when the evidence clearly demonstrates that the other side is of equal landscape quality and value does not seem right."
