Nottingham council leader elected to top police post

Nottingham City Council's leader has been appointed chairman of Nottinghamshire Police Authority.

Jon Collins has been elected to the post at the authority, which oversees the city's police force.

Mr Collins takes over from John Clarke, who stepped down after criticism from government inspectors in the past few months.

A capability review issued in March said the leadership of the police authority was ineffective.

At the end of 2009, the chief executive of the authority, David Wilcock, resigned only two months after he was appointed to the post.

Nottinghamshire Police said in March that it would "develop and implement a programme to strengthen leadership in the authority and improve the way it works".
