Two top level cycling events are being held in the south of Scotland.

British Cycling's criterium series takes to the streets of Dumfries on Friday evening with a special event through the town.

Then the opening round of the iXS European Downhill Cup comes to Innerleithen on Saturday and Sunday.

Both series are expected to draw some of the top competitors in their respective disciplines.

The Dumfries criterium is part of a weekend of cycling challenges in and around the town.

It is followed by an event for non-competitive riders on Saturday and a 100-mile road race the following day.

The Scottish Borders downhill cup should also draw in a large number of spectators.

Scottish World Cup rider Joe Barnes said: "After a sneak preview of the track to be raced on for the iXS at Innerleithen it looks to be a great race."

He described it as "open, fast and very rough" which he said would make for "interesting racing".
