Gun shots heard on County Durham estate

Gun shots have been reported in a County Durham housing estate, police said.

People living in Oakfield, Newton Aycliffe, told officers they heard gunfire on Tuesday night.

Two separate reports were received 20 minutes apart. Three spent shotgun cartridges were found behind a house on the estate.

A Transit van and a Ford Focus car were found with damage consistent with shotgun discharge.

Both vehicles have been taken away for forensic examination.

A police spokesperson said it was a "serious" but "isolated" incident.
