Iron Maiden's 'Number of the Beast' goes #1
29 March 1982
It was clear by the time that Iron Maiden's 'Number Of The Beast' had become the first Heavy Metal album to go straight to number one, that even though the genre had been largely ignored by the music press it was still making a huge connection with the record buying public.
The new lead singer Bruce Dickinson (previously from the band Samson) and his soaring vocals became a formidable presence in the band. Up to this point Iron Maiden were teetering on the edge of worldwide success; this album sent them over the edge.
