BBC Jazz Awards - Winners
Lifetime Achievement - Return To Forever

Best Instrumentalist - Tony Kofi
Throughout the 1990s Tony Kofi's saxophones were heard in several bands including both Jazz Jamaicaa and The Jazz Warriors. His emotional intensity and knowledge of the jazz tradition marked him out as a name to watch even then, and the work of his own bands have seen him deliver on that promise.
Jazz Line-Up Band of The Year - Tom Cawley's Curios
The Acoustic Ladyland keyboardist struck out in a different direction with the formation of this acoustic trio in 2006 (described by Time Out as 'state of the art') with bassist Sam Burgess and drummer Joshua Blackmore. They narrowly missed picking up the best album award last year.
Heart of Jazz Award - Tommy Smith
Saxophonist Tommy Smith joined vibist Gary Burton's band aged just 18, going on to work with big names such as Chick Corea, John Scofield and Kenny Wheeler. He now leads the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and his own Youth Jazz Orchestra as well as his own quartet.
Radio 2 Artist Of The Year - Humphrey Lyttelton
Though primarily known in later life as a broadcaster, Humphrey Lyttelton was first and foremost a jazz musician, celebrating 60 years as a bandleader in January 2008 and boasting a discography that contained well over 200 compositions. He also recorded the first jazz record ever to grace the UK singles chart in 1956!
Services to Jazz - Alan Bates
Alan Bates founded Black Lion Records in the late 60s, recording artists as diverse as Chris Barber, Thelonious Monk and Sun Ra. In the 1980s he took over the running of the Candid label, revamping it and signing Stacey Kent, Clare Teal and Jamie Cullum among others.
Rising Star Award - Kit Downes
Though currently a student at The Royal College of Music, pianist Kit Downes is also carving out a reputation as a name to watch. He is a member of the hotly tipped Empirical and has appeared alongside Acoustic Ladyland, Fraud and Martin Speake.
