BBC Worldwide today announced the sale of the format Dancing with the Stars to Spainsh public broadcaster TVE. This is the first time Spain has snapped up the global hit with the deal being signed during BBC Worldwide’s annual Showcase event this February.

The series in Spain will be retitled Bailando Con Las Estrellas (working title) and will be produced by Gestmusic Endemol for channel La 1. The channel is also the home of  the Spanish version of BBC Worldwide’s format Sewing Bee (Maestros de la Costura).

Andre Renaud, Vice President Sales Italy and Iberia, BBC Worldwide commented: “This is an exciting deal for us as it’s the first time Spanish audiences will have their own version of Dancing with the Stars. Dance is deeply rooted in Spanish culture and so it is a natural fit that the format should find its home on La 1 with TVE.”

Eladio Jareño, Director of TVE said: “The collaboration on Dancing With the Stars strengthens our continuing relationship with BBC Worldwide and we look forward to exploring further opportunities together.”

The deal with Spain, brokered by  BBC Worldwide’s Format Sales Executive Emily Herd, follows hot on the heels of the announcement last week that Iceland broadcaster Stod 2 are also set to produce the format for the first time, entitled Allir Geta Dansað, which will air this Spring.

The world’s leading dance entertainment brand, Dancing with the Stars, which sees well known celebrities join professional dancers to learn and perform a variety of dances, continues to attract broadcasters from across the world, with over 300 series having already aired globally. The sale to Spain has brought the total sales of the format up to 56 countires.
