The award recognizes Ian and DC for their frontline reporting from Colombia in 2015, where they travelled deep inside the country to cover the authorities fight against drug-trafficking, reporting on the Special Forces trying to stem the distribution of cocaine, as well as speaking to those fueling the deadly trade.
Their award-winning report broadcast on the BBC’s daily US newscast World News America in 2015, available in the US and globally on the BBC’s 24-hour international news channel BBC World News, as well as public television in the US. The reports were also featured on BBC News outlets within the UK and online at BBC.com
The judges said: “In a package that was beautifully written, shot and edited, Pannell put a face to the war on drugs by focusing on Buena Ventura - one of the most violent cities in South America. This piece - which the judges found 'compelling' – served as a reminder that the war against cocaine still hasn’t ended and may be impossible to win.
