Ethel And Ernest
Confirmed for BBC One on 28 December at 7.30pm to 9pm
Day and time to be confirmedNEW
From their chance meeting in the 1920s, to the birth of Raymond and beyond, we see some of the most defining moments of the 20th Century through their eyes: the darkness of the Great Depression to the build up to World War II, the Blitz to VE Day and the emergence of a generation from post-war austerity to the cultural enlightenment of the 1960s.
A multi-generational team of top British talent provide the voices for Raymond Briggs’ characters, headed up by Oscar winner Jim Broadbent and Golden Globe winner Brenda Blethyn in the title roles, and Olivier Award Winner Luke Treadaway as Raymond.
They are joined by screen legend Virginia McKenna (Born Free, A Town Like Alice) as Ethel’s employer; Pam Ferris (Matilda, Call The Midwife) as neighbour Mrs Bennet; EastEnders actress June Brown as Ernest’s down-to-earth stepmother; The Fast Show’s Simon Day as a mate of Ernest’s with ‘wife trouble’ and The Thick Of It’s Roger Allam as Ethel’s authoritative doctor.
The film also showcases the vocal talents of child actor Harry Collett (The Hive) as young Raymond.
