Interview with Stanley Johnson,77, writer and former politician.

What was the most memorable part of the experience?

The pleasure of looking out of the window of my room in the Haveli to see Maharaja of Udaipur's Palace on the other side of the lake.

What surprised you the most?

How much I enjoyed the company of my fellow guests.

What was your role within the group?

I regarded myself as a new boy in this world of professional actors and comedians and learned a lot.

Did the experience allow you time to reflect?

Yes, lots of time for reflection. But that palls after a while, so I got through eight books too!

Did you learn anything about yourself?

I realised I'm getting a bit deafer…

Tell us about one of your adventures…

I really enjoyed getting back on a motorcycle, though Ajay's 1942 Triumph was a bit temperamental…

Would you return to the country?

Of course, I've been visiting India since my first trip there (on a motorcycle!) in 1961 and I'm sure I'll go back many times before the final curtain.

Tell us something else about the trip.

Watch out for the green spicy bits in the omelettes! The chillies are very hot!
