Dan McGolpin, Controller of BBC Programming & Daytime has announced a number of factual commissions to join a line-up of titles for daytime on BBC One debuting in 2019.
The new commissions for BBC One include Blue Planet UK, a daytime spin-off presented by Gillian Burke and Steve Brown with Chris Packham that will focus on the UK’s marine wildlife, on air this March. The series has been commissioned as part of the BBC’s on-going commitment to the environmental story and focus on Protecting Our Planet. It will complement the new peak series, Blue Planet Live also on air in March.
Also commissioned for 2019 is Good Morning Dagenham, a five-part documentary series narrated by Larry Lamb and set in Britain’s biggest open air market in East London, to broadcast in March. As well as, 24 Hours On The Inside With Dom Littlewood, which will see Dom go to the US and immerse himself in a range of extreme environments in order to uncover the realities of institutions, from policing and prisons to hospitals. Lastly, Curiosity is a new competitive format hosted by Paul Martin that puts contestant’s knowledge of history, antiques and collectables to the test.
The titles will sit alongside the range of already announced new factual, entertainment and drama programmes for daytime on air this year. These include factual entertainment series The Customer Is Always Right presented by Lucy Alexander; Welsh drama Pitching In, a co-commission with BBC Wales, starring Larry Lamb and Hayley Mills; new home design title Best House In Town; as well as a new arts programme for daytime, Home Is Where The Art Is, fronted by Nick Knowles.

Blue Planet UK
Blue Planet UK is a week-long documentary series for BBC One produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit, the team behind Blue Planet and Blue Planet II. Presented by Gillian Burke (main image) and Steve Brown (pictured above) with Chris Packham, the series will feature especially shot new content that will uncover the incredible stories behind the UK’s marine wildlife, and go beneath the surface to reveal what exists in our nation’s seas.
Across the week the programmes will feature the latest in science, conservation and fishing to offer a health check of our seas. The presenters will dip their toes back in history to see what used to live in British waters and explain how people have influenced what’s living there today. Blue Planet UK will also follow up on the huge global impact of Blue Planet II to look at how own lifestyles affect the future of our oceans. The programmes will offer audiences practical solutions for how to get involved around the country and tackle plastic pollution.
Blue Planet UK is produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit, the Series Producer is Lucy Bowden and the Executive Producer is Rosemary Edwards. It was commissioned by Jo Street for BBC One daytime.
Good Morning Dagenham
Good Morning Dagenham is a new documentary series set within Britain's biggest open air market, in the East End of London. The series, narrated by Larry Lamb, will focus on the market bosses' attempts to fight off the threat of internet shopping with new weekly attractions and new stalls.
Each programme will tell stories about workers at the market, first-time traders, and the often surprising range of products and services on offer to the huge crowds who visit the market each Sunday. The series reflects the outlook of the loveable characters who feature in it, offering an insight into their world.
Good Morning Dagenham is produced by Big Wheel Film & Television. The series producers are Mark Jones, Zoe Dobson and Dunk Barnes. It was commissioned by Lindsay Bradbury for BBC One daytime.
24 Hours On The Inside With Dom Littlewood
In this new ten-part BBC One series Dom Littlewood will immerse himself within ten key US institutions and emergency services for 24 hours, from policing and prisons to hospitals. Arriving at each location, he’ll meet a mentor to guide him through his immersive experience, where he’ll eat, sleep and work just as his counterpart does.
By imbedding himself in a range of extreme environments for 24 hours Dom will aim to uncover the realities of US institutions, gain an insight into the work of these front-line operatives and ask whether there is anything UK services could learn from the US.
24 Hours On The Inside With Dom Littlewood is a Flicker Production. The Executive Producer is Colleen Flynn. It was commissioned by Julie Shaw for BBC One daytime.
Curiosity is a new competitive format for BBC One hosted by Paul Martin that puts contestant’s knowledge of history, antiques and collectables to the test. The 15-part series tasks two teams to use their skills, expertise and intuition, against the clock, to value and date the items in Paul’s fictional shop. They will also be tasked with finding fakes, spotting links behind objects and discovering the stories behind the kind of trinkets and treasures that cram collectable emporiums and second hand shops throughout the land.
Paul is a fountain of knowledge and he brings the stories of the objects to life, revealing their provenance and the unique attributes that make them either rare or sought after pieces.
