Simple Minds to perform live In Concert for BBC Radio 2

There could be no better way to premier our Simple Minds Acoustic set than performing at the beautiful and intimate Hackney Empire. It won't be that intimate however. Because thanks to BBC Radio 2 - the whole world can of course listen in! So please make sure that you do.Lead Singer of Simple Minds, Jim Kerr

In her show tonight, Jo Whiley announced that Simple Minds will perform a special BBC Radio 2 In Concert on Thursday 10 November at Hackney Empire, London.

The performance, which will be their only UK show in 2016, will be live from 8pm on BBC Radio 2, as well as available to watch live on the BBC Red Button and online at bbc.co.uk/radio2. Earlier in the day, listeners will be able to hear exclusive tracks from Simple Minds soundcheck on Ken Bruce’s Radio 2 show.

Scotland's Simple Minds formed in late seventies Glasgow, evolving from punk group, Johnny and the Self-Abusers. Throughout their 30 year career the band have been responsible for various rock anthems, including 1985’s Alive and Kicking and Don’t You (Forget About Me), the popular Breakfast Club closing song.

Enduring members, singer Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill, have experimented with various styles over the years - from post punk new wave to art rock. In May the band earned an Ivor Novello Award for their Outstanding Song Collection.

For their BBC Radio 2 In Concert, Simple Minds will perform a career-spanning collection of songs reimagined acoustically, on the eve of their album’s release. The origin of Simple Minds Acoustic can be traced back to a rare live session they recorded for The Chris Evans Breakfast Show in 2014, which inspired the band to start working on some stripped back arrangements of some of their hits.

The concert will also feature some special guests.

Lead Singer of Simple Minds, Jim Kerr, says: "There could be no better way to premier our Simple Minds Acoustic set than performing at the beautiful and intimate Hackney Empire. It won't be that intimate however. Because thanks to BBC Radio 2 - the whole world can of course listen in! So please make sure that you do."

Jeff Smith, Head of Music BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, says: “I’m delighted Simple Minds are performing this very exclusive concert for Radio 2 – their only show in the UK this year. We know how much our audience loved the re-imagination of Status Quo’s songs live In Concert a couple of years ago when I asked them to deliver their songs without electric guitars. I think it will be an equally rare treat to hear acoustic arrangements of some of Simple Minds’ best-loved songs performed live for the Radio 2 audience, as well as for all those watching online at bbc.co.uk/radio2 and on the BBC Red Button.”

Tickets for the event are priced between £25-£38 plus £2.80 booking fee, and can be purchased at bbc.co.uk/radio2 from 8.30pm on Monday 10 October. Audience members must be 18 years old or over to attend this event and proof of age may be requested upon entry.
