After a successful pilot as part of this year’s BBC Three Comedy Feeds, original comedy Sunny D has been commissioned for a full series for the channel.

Starring award-nominated stand-up comedian Dane Baptiste (Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nominee, 2014), Sunny D is a smart, fast-paced and stylish sitcom that captures the angst of the quarter-life crisis, family, love and loss, from Dane’s perspective. Trapped in a mundane 9-5 job and still living at home with his moody twin and unsympathetic parents, Dane dreams of his escape. The series will co-star Don Warrington MBE (Rising Damp, Doctor Who, Death in Paradise) and Gbemi Ikumelo (Broadchurch).

Dane Baptiste says: "I'm incredibly happy that Sunny D has been commissioned! It represents the possibility of the mainstream opening the comedy landscape to a new perspective and the resurrection of the Black British sitcom. I grew up watching sitcoms on the BBC, so to have them invest in my own project is an opportunity that I relish and am grateful for."

Damian Kavanagh, Controller, BBC Three, added: “We’re excited to have Dane and Sunny D on BBC Three. BBC Three will always be the home of the best and brightest new comedy talent.”

Rebecca Papworth, Executive Producer, BBC says: “Sunny D gives full flight to rising star Dane Baptiste's comic rage against an unsympathetic universe. It is laugh out loud, imaginative, compelling and honest storytelling from a big name of the future.”

The 4x25 minute series is written by Dane Baptiste, commissioned by Shane Allen, Controller, BBC Comedy Commissioning and Damian Kavanagh, Controller, BBC Three. It is a BBC Comedy in-house production and will be executive produced by Rebecca Papworth.

Notes to Editors
The Comedy Feeds are part of an on-going BBC Comedy, BBC Three and BBC Academy initiative to develop the next generation of comedy talent, both on- and off-screen. In addition to Sunny D, a number of previous pilots have gone on to secure commissions for series including Fried, People Just Do Nothing, Josh and Impractical Jokers.
