BBC Radio 2 In Concert presents Jeff Lynne’s ELO
Many of Radio 2’s listeners have been fans of Jeff Lynne’s music and ELO since the early days. Happily he’s agreed to come back to play those much loved classic songs, plus for the first time tracks from his amazing new album. Jeff Smith, Head of Music, BBC Radio 2
As a founding member of the band and creator of ELO’s music, Jeff Lynne has experienced global success with a thriving career as a solo artist, composer, producer and songwriter. Lynne was also a co-founder and member of The Travelling Wilburys together with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and frequent collaborators George Harrison and Tom Petty. He’s produced and collaborated with The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, and most recently, Bryan Adams.
After a brief but highly esteemed appearance to close BBC’s Children in Need Rocks in 2013, Jeff Lynne’s ELO performed in earnest for the first time in 28 years at last year’s Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park to critical acclaim.
Recently speaking on the Radio 2 Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Jeff Lynne said: “I think you [Chris Evans] started it all, which I’m very pleased about and very proud to say. When you asked everybody, right here ‘anybody fancy watching Jeff Lynne?’ and you had all those answers. It just went from there and the concert (Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park] was the most wonderful one I’ve ever done, by miles.”
Jeff Smith, Head of Music, BBC Radio 2, says: “Myself and many of Radio 2’s listeners have been fans of Jeff Lynne’s music and ELO since the early days, and I was so pleased that we managed to finally persuade him out of the studio into Radio 2 Live In Hyde Park last year. Happily he’s agreed to come back this time to our small and intimate Radio Theatre to play those much loved classic songs, plus for the first time anywhere, tracks from the amazing new Jeff Lynne’s ELO album, Alone In The Universe."
With a distinct style that seamlessly and innovatively blends rock, pop and classical, ELO has had twenty six UK Top 40 singles, making Lynne's sweeping productions some of the most recognisable music of the last forty years and helping sell over 50 million records worldwide. Widely agreed upon as one of the greatest record producers in music history, Lynne has had a tremendous musical influence on the world and continues to do so with a new album that is at once vitally current and comfortingly familiar.
Past BBC Radio 2 In Concerts have featured show-stopping artists including Grammy-winning and Bond theme singer Sam Smith, as well as Ed Sheeran, Paul Weller, Kylie, Coldplay and Take That.
